Clever Plan

Sometimes I impress myself with how clever I am. The problem that needed solving wasn't Maria, it was that we hadn't seen much of the island yet and our hotel were liars who wouldn't get a penny more than I prepaid from me. So we needed to switch hotels to somewhere else but everything within walking distance was out of our price range. We decided that we would rent two motorbikes and use them to transport our stuff from our current hotel to our new hotel, which was 3 kilometers away.

How were we going to do that without needing a taxi or walking 3 km to return the bikes at least once? Here is where my cleverness came in to effect, we rented one motorbike from near our current hotel and then drove to the new hotel and checked in to our room. We then rented another motorbike from our new hotel. We returned to the first hotel and loaded our bags on to the back and drove our stuff to the new hotel.

At the end of the night we took one bike back near our old hotel and returned to our new hotel on the same bike. Problem solved. Okay, maybe I wasn't that clever but at least I was thinking ahead and didn't end up having to walk 3km in the dark.

Last night we had met an Aussie guy who lives on the island and he showed us all of the places that he thought worth going to. After we had dropped our bags off we headed to some waterfalls that are hidden inside of this weird Jurassic Park style closed/half built complex.

The waterfall was a bit of a walk into the woods and was a bit disappointing. The Aussie guy said you could swim up to it and then get your photo taken inside of the falls. Although this was partially true it was a very underwhelming waterfall and was full of local Vietnamese who just wanted to stare at us when we were wearing clothes, more so Janelle than me, so we just put our feet in and then headed back out.

The roads on Phu Quoc island are really bizarre. You will be driving down a really nicely paved road and then have to turn off to a red dirt road full of rocks and potholes.

Then suddenly out of no where a really nice road will appear connecting two dirt roads together and nothing else. We drove on this bizarre arrangement of roads all the way to the south of the island, passing small towns along the way.

The waves on the island are different depending on what season you are in and which side of the island you are on. During the rainy season, the West side of the island has lots of large waves and the East side of the island has no waves. Our hotel is on the West side so we went to a beach on the East side at the South of the island and there were in fact no waves at all.

The sun was shining all day and riding motorbikes was a lot of fun. Janelle and I both did a really great job of not crashing or running in to anyone. We also finally got the beautiful sunset we had been looking for the past couple of nights. Such a good day.
