My what a big 'stache you have

A Sunday in Berlin means Flea market day. I went to one and looked through the headless dolls, coins, records and various other junk people had brought from their houses. As usual I wasn’t really looking for anything but the junk that people have is very enjoyable to look through. I went to a stand to get some lunch and asked for a bratwurst. The man working there told me they didn’t have any despite the sign saying “bratwurst” and that I could see them on the grill. I looked at him and asked again and he said they didn’t have any. I pointed to them on the grill and he said “Yes, we have bratwurst. Would you like one?” I have no idea what he thought I was saying but I was glad to get one. I always carry with me a small notebook and pen in my pocket for jotting down directions, notes or ideas. My pen had stopped working so I looked for one and found one for €.5 all I had was €.49 and the guy took it anyway. That’s 2% off, what a deal!

I went to the East Side Gallery, a 1.5 KM stretch of the East side of the Berlin Wall that was painted by artists to show their feelings of the wall coming down. Historically the West side of the wall had graffiti but the East side was clean because of the guards who’s job it was to keep people away from the wall. As part of the 20 year celebrations, the parts of the gallery that were breaking apart have been repaired and the artists are touching up their previous work and making it vibrant again.

I also went to the Jewish Museum of Berlin which was amazing and is definitely high on my list of best museums. It was informative, entertaining, stimulating, and other large words that should be used to describe a good museum. It covered the history of Jews in Europe from first immigration to the present. The design of the museum was also very interesting with two buildings that only connect underground and several permanent exhibits that will remain empty to symbolize all that was lost during the holocaust. The museum of course covered the holocaust but didn’t focus solely on it. Jewish culture, customs and religion were all covered through personal stories and exhibits. There was a movie in one of the exhibitions and the audio was in German but there were English subtitles. The problem was that the narrator would talk for a minute in German and all the English subtitles would say is “temple”. I know that German words are long but I think he was saying a little more than that.
