Jumping at the Fortress
When I got to my hostel in Belgrade they were having an in hostel Halloween party sans costumes. Basically they were sitting around listening to music and having some drinks, which sounded perfect to me after a long day on the train and then wandering around lost in the city in the cold night. My hostel in Belgrade gives each person staying here 1 free beer per day as well as unlimited Rajija, Serbian wine. Some of the staff had invited their local friends over and they had brought many other kinds of local alcohol, such as peach vodka and beer in 2 liter plastic bottles. Needless to say it was an enjoyable and interesting first night in Belgrade.
My first full day in Belgrade I wandered the streets along the rivers, there are two here the Sava and the Danube, up to the old fortress. The fortress has great views of both rivers and the surrounding cities. The leaves are changing and all of the trees are very colorful. I walked around through some markets and the city streets and found a restaurant for lunch. The menu was in Serbian, which I cannot read but I saw the word “Hawaii” and assumed it was a Hawaiian pizza. When it came out it was in fact a Hawaiian pizza but the sauce wasn’t on it, it was on the side in a bowl, so I could add as much or as little as I wanted, and it was really good that way.
In the middle of the town square there were workers erecting a giant cardboard wall that people were putting pictures and sayings on. I’m sure it is some kind of social experiment but I couldn’t find out the details online and the sign about it was in Serbian, which I do not read.
For dinner one of the girls in my hostel went to a nearby sandwich shop and ordered a traditional Serbian sandwich. A man came into the shop and appeared to be homeless and on drugs and wanted to buy a sandwich but he didn’t have enough money and the staff turned him away. The homeless man looked at the girl from the hostel and then at her sandwich and ran at her and grabbed her sandwich with both hands trying to pry it from her fingers. The girl let out a shriek and one of the employees behind the counter came out and started to hit the homeless man. After a couple of seconds the homeless man was able to pry the sandwich from the girls hand and took off running down the street with it in his hands.
